One of the television shows I’m currently watching is called “The 100.” Like most of my favorite shows, it involves the end of the world. This time, there was some sort of nuclear war and a small remnant of humanity escaped to outer space to live in a giant space station, cobbled together by connecting the 10 or so space stations from different countries that were in orbit at the time.
It’s been 97 years since the war and supplies are running low on “The Ark”, their name for the stations. One-hundred people are sent down to see if the earth is survivable yet. As the story unfolds, you see remnants of our civilization. A crumbling statue of Lincoln is all that remains from his memorial. Another scene has a small portion of the Statue of Liberty. Things that were thought to last for a long period of time are now broken and mostly gone.
It’s hard to create something that will last. Whether it’s a physical object like the Lincoln Memorial, or something less tangible like love—building something that lasts is never easy. Consider marriage: 41% of first-time marriages end in divorce. Or, think about friendships in your life. How many have fallen by the wayside in your life?
For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39
The good news is that while we may fail at creating a lasting love, Jesus doesn’t. His love for you will never end. No matter what happens in your life, He will never stop loving you. No matter what you do or say, He will never stop loving you. Even if you turn away from Him, He will never stop loving you.
So how do you build a lasting love? It starts by recognizing this profound fact: Jesus will always love, and nothing will be able to separate you from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord!
