I have been a Christian for as long as I can remember. I was told (and believed) that Jesus loves me as early as two years old. And I have a bit of a “Susie Sunshine” outlook on life—always have. So, for many, many years, although I knew the Devil was real, I sort of ignored that reality. Didn’t like to think about it. Didn’t want to talk about it.
As I have aged (all the way to 54, now!), I have seen the Devil’s work. I have seen the way he deceives young women into thinking that what matters most is how they look. I have been angered by the way he gives people the message that they don’t know enough about the Bible to come to Bible study. I have watched addictions destroy lives and families. I have seen the way he sabotages efforts (mine and others) to make real and lasting change in regards to destructive habits. Disease, mental illness, death…all the work of the Devil. Here’s what the Bible says:
Be sober minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. – 1 Peter 5:8 (ESV)
I may not like to think I have such an adversary, but I do. We all do. There is a Devil who is consistently and constantly working to destroy our relationship with Jesus. He will do anything he can to separate us from God.
Of course, there is good news! Although we shouldn’t be surprised that the Devil is at work, we also are not defeated by it. Jesus has defeated the Devil. It is not up to us—the victory is won. When faced with the Devil’s work, we call it what it is and run to Jesus. That’s where the safety and refuge lies. When I recognize the Devil at work, I like to picture myself in the crook of Jesus’ arm, snuggled in and safe. It’s a great place to be.
