My first position as a Director of Christian Education was in Texas. It was a wonderful church to start my ministry in, but it wasn’t without some challenges. One of the biggest issues we struggled with at that church was worship styles. They had been doing contemporary worship for a while there, but it was only allowed on Saturday evenings in the gym, not in the worship center.
Some in the church thought there was no place for contemporary worship, preferring we only offer traditional services. Others felt it was critical that we offer it every week on Sunday morning. These two groups clashed numerous times and many left the church because of it.
I can’t help but feel sad for all the hurt that came from the “worship wars” as they were known back then. Too much of the focus was on the specific style of worship, and not the heart. God is much less interested in your worship “style” than your “spirit” in worship.
But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
God delights in the creativity of His people! I believe it pleases Him when we worship in various styles and settings. But it delights Him even more when we worship Him with our whole heart and soul.
We want our worship at First Trinity to focus on spirit over style. As we pursue the vision God has before us, we are excited to see what new styles and settings God might add to our existing styles as we worship Him in spirit and truth!
