Somethin’ Extra

When I was in high school, my parents brought us to the large black church on the north side of the city in Michigan where we lived. The pastor was a well-known community leader, and the beautiful Gospel music, congregational participation, vast choir, and vibrant energy of that place amazed and inspired me. As a young white woman who was accustomed to quiet music and relatively inexpressive faces at church, my eyes were opened to a new way to worship…

Our Eyes Are On God

Have you ever tried to solve a large problem? Some problems are so large that they seem too big for me. It’s like looking at a tangled ball of yarn. Pulling on one thread tugs another, which might make the knot even worse. So it is with large problems also. The solution is hard to find because every solution seems to cause several more problems. These potential problems get in the way of solving the real problem because we become…

Welcome to the Family

This summer I celebrate 15 years of marriage. It’s been a wonderful, wild ride. Those first months and years were spent learning what it means to be a family as husband and wife, but also with extended family. Not only did I have a new “immediate” family, but suddenly my extended family had more than doubled, and I had a big one to start with! It’s difficult adjusting to new family systems. There’s a learning period as you start to…

Joining Jesus in His Mission

One of the things I love about being in a team ministry at First Trinity is that it’s so much more fun to do ministry with others. There’s joy in serving at an event like Saturday of Service, Workcamp, or volunteering at the hospital. It’s productive, meaningful, and important work. While doing these things on my own is all of those things, it’s usually more fun and exciting for me when I serve with others—especially people I like. The presence…

Sermon Experiment Incoming

There’s a lot of work that goes into preparing a sermon for services at First Trinity. Pastor does most of the work of writing the sermon, but there are several others involved as well. We have a worship planning team that meets regularly to plan out the sermon series topics we’ll use. One of the main things we focus on at this time of year is summer worship planning. As the team talked about what to do this summer, we…

Connected and Caring

Whenever I travel with other church workers, I always feel a little bit guilty or uncomfortable talking about First Trinity. I didn’t have this problem at my previous churches. It’s not because things are difficult for me here, but actually the opposite. The staff here is so blessed by love and support that the church shows us. Other church workers don’t always experience that same joy. As I think about the vision, I realize that the care I receive as…
