Rumors are destructive. I wonder if you’ve had this happen to you: Someone asks you about a topic because they “heard” something about you from others and want to find out if it’s true or not. I’m thankful for that person because I can correct the rumors, but I worry about the 99 others who never bother to check the truth behind the rumors.
People say all kinds of things about Jesus and His followers. People think they know who Jesus is because of what they’ve heard and seen from others. In 2015, a study found that almost 1 in 5 churchgoers reported that they never read the Bible. Imagine the statistics for non-churchgoers! And yet, everyone has an opinion about who Jesus is.
As we start a new sermon series, maybe we should go to the source and hear what Jesus has to say about himself? During this series, we’ll be looking at six “I Am” statements that Jesus made:
- I Am the Resurrection and the Life (John 11)
- I Am the Door (John 10:1-9)
- I Am the Good Shepherd (John 10:10-18)
- I Am the Bread of Life (John 6:30-58)
- I Am the Vine (John 15:1-11)
- I Am the Light of the World (John 8:12-20)
Together, we’ll hear who Jesus is in His own words. Each of these images reveal a facet of the often misunderstood Son of God. You may even find that some of the rumors you’ve heard or things you’ve believed about Jesus aren’t quite accurate—But you’ll also find that the truth is richer than fiction and brings life.
