Reaching Beyond Our Walls

One thing has become clear since we started the vision process at First Trinity back in October of 2014: God’s people have a desire to start reaching beyond our own building. As we read through all the ideas for where people feel God is leading us as a church, many focused on the community. Expanding Lifetree Cafe, more service opportunities, and expanding our Preschool were just a few ideas. As a special kick-off for the new vision—especially the community-focused piece…

When God Left the Building

A pervasive part of the American fabric is fraying and decaying before our eyes. The church is withering. Though the vast majority (77%) of Americans identify themselves as Christians, they have largely stopped attending church. Less than 20% of the population now makes it to church in a typical week. Some 4000 churches are closing every year. It’s a major and unprecedented social upheaval. The film follows a church that has seen its attendance plunge from 900 to 40.…

Worship Survey: Sharing the Peace and Verbal Announcements

Several weeks ago, we talked about some changes we made in worship. You can read some of the background about that here. We’re interested in hearing your thoughts about how we’re doing with the recent changes. Providing a name in the form below helps us follow-up with clarifying questions and address your concerns. All feedback will be shared with the Executive Ministry Team (Pastor Chuck Whited, Jason Christ, Marsha Peth, Sue Steege, Tim Hartnett) and the Worship Planning Team (Jason,…

An Upside-Down Christmas Party

Each year, our youth used to get together for an annual Christmas party. There would be games and activities, food, and of course: a gift exchange using the “white elephant” format where you can either pick presents from the middle or steal someone else’s gift. The exchange was always a lot of fun, but the gifts slowly devolved into gift cards and snack products. It’s hard to give good gifts when you don’t know who will end up with the…

God Is Moving at the University at Buffalo

What do a former prisoner, aliens, healthy food, and Thanksgiving all have in common? They were all the topics of conversation in the past month at our new outreach on the University at Buffalo campus called Lifetree Café!  First Trinity has hosted a Lifetree Café for about a year and half here at 1570 Niagara Falls Boulevard which has been a blessing to many in our congregation and community. Starting last spring we dreamed of a second location, ideally targeted…

40 Days of Love Recap

We just concluded our All Church Study for 2014: “40 Days of Love” (October 11 – November 17). It was a great six weeks where 156 people dug into God’s Word together around the topic of love. You can read the full report, here. All Church Studies are here to stay for a while. There’s something great that God does when His people are all focusing in the same direction. One significant change we made this year was assigning people…

Why We’re Trying No Sharing of the Peace

If you were at worship this weekend, you heard we are going to try removing the “sharing of the peace” from the beginning of the worship service. I wanted to take a few minutes and share with you some of the thinking behind the decision. How We Got Here We’ve been doing the sharing of the peace for a long time at First Trinity. At one point, it was traditionally done before the Lord’s Supper, but later got moved to…
