Let The Resolutions Begin!

Ahhh New Year’s… Everything beginning anew. The chance to start over; perhaps the chance to start healing. Maybe for you it’s a chance to start a new job, embark upon a new family journey whether through marriage or a newborn or even through harder situations with divorce or loss of a loved one. As I sat here trying to determine what God placed on my heart to write to you about, I couldn’t help but think of the resolutions you and I make year in and year out. What is it about the changing of a year that pushes us to want to change something or better ourselves or our situation? A year after all is a significant amount of time. But what if we didn’t wait for “the New Year?”

As I continue to mature I find myself more and more open to the opportunity of change and looking to improve myself. Whether it’s physically, mentally, spiritually, etc… All well and good. However, there was a point in my life—well, many if I think about it–where I wasn’t as open to change. I thought I knew it all and as far as I was concerned I was poised to take on the world. Newsflash (make sure you’re sitting for this) the world started to win more and more battles and the hurt and frustration only continued to pile up.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV)

That’s when I decided to change. Change my attitude, change my outlook, change my thinking…change my heart. The astonishing part of all of this, it wasn’t New Year’s. It was a Sunday in some sunny month that I truly can’t remember. But I can remember that I made a definitive choice to change. I am not sure how my story will end, but I can tell you confidently, perhaps boastfully, that I made the right decision that day.

Continue to make your resolution because, honestly, why not? Its New Year’s! However, as we enter and progress through 2015, lean on the Lord’s promise to you, “…plans to prosper you…plans to give you hope and a future.”

What is something in your life you need to change?
