“You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Psalm 16:11 ESV
I guess I’m at the age where I’m supposed to be deciding what I want to do for the rest of my life. Of course, God could change my direction at any time, but for now, I’ve chosen my major, what jobs on and off campus I’m doing, and I’m starting to think about the future – my family, financial preparation, etc. Naturally, in all of this, I’m turning to what makes me happy. What is it that brings me joy and how can I make decisions now and in the future that will keep that joy in my life?
The more I think about it – and, it’s only cliche because it’s true – it’s not about my job title, it’s not about how much money or things I have, or if I had the coolest clothes. Our purpose while we’re here on Earth involves people.
“…Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world and to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.” John 13:1 ESV
I would love to be able to say this. I want to know that when it’s time for me to go, I’ve shown love, spread the joy that comes from the gospel, given hope, and served God to the best of my ability. And I want to do this because I want to, not because I feel I should. It truly gives me so much joy to see someone smile. It’s an amazing feeling to know that something you did made someone truly joyful. We have the ability to do this because we want people to feel the same joy we can feel as a result of Jesus’ amazing work on Earth and His great sacrifice for us.
What’s really cool, though, is that we get to use the things God has given us to serve others and Him! These things that don’t fill us can take on a new picture in our eyes when we see how we can use them for a greater purpose. Our talents, financial blessings, or life experiences can all be used to point to God.
We receive so much hope and happiness from what Jesus has done for us. It’s one of those things you just can’t keep to yourself! It’s huge news even today. Jesus was the ultimate example of how to show love and serve others.
“I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live.” Ecclesiastes 3:12
What is it in our lives we could be using to serve others and point to Jesus?
