If you’ve ever watched a courtroom drama, you’ve heard these words before: “You have the right to an attorney. If you can’t afford one, one will be appointed for you.” This is one of the things that makes our legal system great. If you are facing a charge that could result in jail time or worse, you’re guaranteed an advocate who will defend you.
Of course, if you can afford an attorney, you’ll more than likely be able to increase your chance for an acquittal by hiring a defense attorney. The higher profile case, the higher profile—and more successful in many cases—the lawyer that represents the defendant.
Did you know that you are in need of an attorney at this very moment? God gave His perfect law to show you how to live, but you have broken it. There will come a time when you must stand before the perfect judge and face the music. It sounds grim, but there’s good news!
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:1-2
An attorney has been appointed for you. Jesus Christ, the righteous one, will be your defender on that judgement day to come. For those who believe in Jesus, there will be no death sentence. Jesus, the propitiation (that’s a fancy church word for diverting the wrath of God from one person to another) of our sins.
In other words, Jesus bore the wrath of God so that you could go free. And now He stands before the judge, reminding Him that your sins have been removed by Jesus’ blood. You now stand before God as innocent and pure!
